The Making of a Man
There is something special about watching a young man grow when you know his story is still being written. You can see the talent. You can see the potential. You can see the dreams. But more importantly, you can see the person he is becoming. Donte Howard is one of those young men. An athlete. A graphic designer. A dreamer. A worker. A son. A brother. A young man with enormous goals in front of him and enough ability to accomplish things that may seem impossible to other people. But what makes Donte special is not simply what he can do. It is who he is becoming while he does it.
Donte has big dreams, and big dreams require something from you. They require sacrifice. They require discipline. They require you to keep working when nobody is clapping. They require you to believe in a future that you cannot completely see yet. That is the season Donte is in right now. He is building. Every workout matters. Every rep matters. Every design matters. Every decision matters. Every mistake matters. Every lesson matters. Because all of it is developing the young man who will eventually have to carry the weight of the opportunities he is praying for.
Athletically, Donte has gifts. Creatively, he has gifts. Put him on a field and you see an athlete. Put him in front of a creative project and another side of him comes alive. That combination is rare. But talent alone will never be the greatest thing about Donte Howard. His greatest accomplishment will be becoming a man whose character is even stronger than his ability. Life is teaching him that right now. He is learning about responsibility, accountability, relationships, choices, discipline, morals, values, and consequences. Some lessons will feel good. Others will hurt. Some will come through victories. Others will come through mistakes. But none of them have to be wasted.
That is part of becoming a man. You are not supposed to have everything figured out as a young person. You are supposed to learn. You are supposed to grow. You are supposed to be challenged. You are supposed to have moments that force you to look in the mirror and decide what kind of person you want to become. Character is not built by never making mistakes. Character is built by what you do after the lesson arrives. You take ownership. You make the adjustment. You become wiser. You become stronger. You keep moving forward.
And Donte, never underestimate how many people are watching that growth. Especially your family. Being a great son and brother is bigger than anything that will ever appear beside your name on a scoreboard. Long after the uniforms are gone, the games are over, and people stop talking about statistics, your family will remember the young man you became. They will remember whether you loved them. Whether you respected them. Whether you showed up. Whether you protected the family name. Whether you became somebody your younger family members could look toward and say, “That’s how a man is supposed to carry himself.”
And to Donte’s father, there is something you deserve to hear too. Your work is showing. Raising a son is not about producing a perfect young man. It is about giving him enough foundation to find his way when life begins testing everything you taught him. There will be moments when a father wonders whether his son heard the conversations, remembered the lessons, understood the sacrifices, or recognized how much love was behind the correction. He may not always say it. He may not fully understand all of it yet. But those seeds are there. Every conversation. Every sacrifice. Every time you showed up. Every correction he did not want to hear. Every lesson about being a man. It is in him.
One day Donte will understand some things differently than he does today. That is one of the beautiful parts of growing up. One day he will understand what certain sacrifices cost. He will understand why his father worried. Why his family pushed him. Why certain standards mattered. Why people refused to let him settle for less than what they knew was inside of him. And one day, when he is standing in a place his younger self could only dream about, he will be able to look backward and recognize all the hands that helped push him forward.
Donte, there is a bright future waiting for you, but you still have to build it. Protect your name. Protect your character. Protect your gifts. Choose your circle carefully. Listen to people who love you enough to tell you the truth. Work when nobody is watching. Stay humble when everybody starts watching. When you make a mistake, own it. When life knocks you down, get back up. When an opportunity opens, be prepared. And when success eventually comes, never forget the people who loved you before the world knew your name.
You are more than an athlete. You are more than a graphic designer. You are more than your highlights, accomplishments, mistakes, or potential. You are a young man becoming somebody. That process is worth protecting. The goal is not simply to become successful. The goal is to become a man of integrity, discipline, faith, loyalty, humility, courage, and purpose who can handle success when it arrives.
There may come a day when people see Donte Howard accomplishing things that look extraordinary. They may call him talented. They may call him gifted. They may even call him lucky because they were not there for all the quiet days that created the public victories. But the people closest to him will know. They will know about the work. They will know about the lessons. They will know about the growing pains. They will know about the father who kept pouring into him, the family that kept believing in him, and the young man who made the decision to keep becoming better.
Donte, your story is just beginning.
Make your father proud. Make your family proud. But most importantly, become the kind of man that one day, when you look into the mirror, you are proud of too.
There are dreams with your name on them that you have not even imagined yet. There are rooms you have not entered. People you have not met. Opportunities you cannot see. Lives you may eventually impact. Keep working. Keep learning. Keep creating. Keep competing. Keep growing.
Because the world has not seen the finished version of Donte Howard.
Neither have you.
And that may be the most exciting part of all.
Your future is calling. Make sure the man you are becoming is ready to answer it.
