Brittney Holton: 21 Years of Being a Safe Place

Some people go to work every day and fulfill a job description. Then there are people like Brittney Holton, whose presence becomes part of the heartbeat of an entire community. For 21 years, Brittney has served the Harrisburg School District in multiple capacities, including security, secretary, family engagement specialist, and IT specialist. The titles may have changed throughout the years, but one thing never has: her heart for people.

Twenty one years is more than a career milestone. It represents thousands of mornings showing up, countless conversations, generations of students walking through the doors, families needing guidance, coworkers needing support, and young people simply needing someone to remind them that they matter. Brittney has been that person.

Ask Brittney what she loves most about working with students, and her answer tells you everything you need to know about who she is. It isn’t about recognition or a title. It’s about the interactions. The impact. The moments when a student needs someone to listen. The days when a child needs a hug more than they need another lecture. The moments when a young person is carrying something too heavy for their age and simply needs a safe place to put it down.

Brittney became that safe place.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts any adult can give a child: the feeling that when life gets difficult, there is someone in the building who sees you, hears you, and cares about what happens to you.

There are students Brittney has impacted who may never remember every conversation they shared with her. They may forget what classroom they were headed to or what was happening that particular day. But they will remember how she made them feel. They will remember that when they needed somebody, Ms. Holton was there. And years from now, some of those same students will become parents, professionals, educators, leaders, and community builders. Somewhere inside the people they become will be a piece of the compassion Brittney gave them when they needed it most.

That is legacy.

Brittney, after 21 years, your greatest accomplishment cannot be measured by a résumé, a position, or the number of days you’ve worked. Your greatest accomplishment lives in the people you’ve touched. Every student who felt safer because you were there. Every child who felt heard because you listened. Every family that felt supported. Every young person who walked away from you feeling a little stronger, a little calmer, or a little more loved.

One day, the halls may look different. The technology will change. New students will fill the classrooms, and new employees will walk through those doors. But nothing can erase the fingerprints you have left on the Harrisburg School District.

Because for 21 years, you didn’t simply serve a school district.

You served people. You protected hearts. You listened. You loved. You showed up.

And somewhere today, there is a former student living a better life who may not even realize that one conversation, one hug, one moment of patience, or one act of kindness from Brittney Holton helped them become who they are.

That is the kind of work that doesn’t end when the workday does.

That is purpose. That is impact. That is 21 years of legacy in a Major way!!
